Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (to the fans, FMA:B) is a new rendering of the popular manga series by Hiromu Arakawa. Disclaimer: The opinions of this review will only cover the first 13 episodes and should not be seen as my opinion over the whole series. Story:*** The first thirteen episodes is a quick run through of what was covered in the first twenty-five episodes of it's predecessor Fullmetal Alchemist. That being said, it feels as if you are watching an abridged story and many of the scenes are rushed where sentimentality should have reigned or thoughtfulness given for a certain idea. It also didn't allow for enough character developement of many of the secondary characters, some of whom would not be returning for the second volume :'(. But it is still interesting and gives enough action and plot to keep a viewer begging for more. It leaves off at a pretty bad spot that basically says "Too bad, you have to wait for the next release, nyah nyah!" Music **** LOVE THE INTRO!!! Yui is an amazing artist and I am so glad her song was chosen, it's exciting and beautiful and sets a mood for the series, especially if you know the translation. The ending is good and catchy, but is completely overshadowed. Background music is very nice but isn't very noticeable, which could be a plus or a vice for this series. Voice Acting **** Vic Mignogna reassumes his role as Ed and is spectacular, showing how much he has improved over the years in his vocal prowess. Sadly Al's Voice Actor, Aaron Dismuke (sp.) was unable to return to roll a la puberty. So they brought in a relatively new face to the industry Maxey Whitehead. It took her a while to fit into the roll, but by the third episode I had accepted her as a reasonably good casting. All the rest of the cast plays their rolls well and I really can't complain. In Japanese, Romi Paku plays a spectacular Ed and it is fully worth it to watch the show twice in order to hear her performance. Characters **** Oh the characters are the best part! Hughes is a dad any father should try to emulate. Ed can seem a little stand offish and rude but is nevertheless pure in a dark-past sort of way. Al is loveable and innocent. Hawkeye is the perfect dangerous lady for this series. And Winry is, well she's Winry. Scar is an excellent antagonist/antihero. Art *** I can't say this show is outright gorgeous, in my opinion it could have been far better. Not to say it doesn't look realistic, it does, but there are a lot of scenes where they went really cheap on the backgrounds. Animation is smooth, no unnecesary still screens or spotty movements. Box *** Thin cardboard cover is aesthetic and not too flimsy. Inside are two thin dvd cases which dvds are easily accessed by pressing in the middle. There are also four collectors' postcards/pictures for your gazing pleasure. Special Features *** Cast commentary for both episodes 1 and 10 (Minor spoilers for part 3 in the first, second is hilarious!). Overview: Good series, get it, this show gets better in following releases and is definitely worth your time and emotionally touching, I cried (ONLY TWICE) and laughed and sat at the edge of my seat. So get it, watch it, et hic est Caerulei, vide vos! Parental Caution: Moderate Swearing/Profanity (d***, bas***d, hell) Disturbing imagery. (serial killers, masacres, war, wierd supernatural stuff I can't entirely explain without a full essay.) Blood/violenceRead full review
I like this DVD because it was popular amongst many people including nerdy people. It deserved a lot of credit after watching myself. The opening songs and ending are awesome. "Brotherhood" is better than the first original. So its like a alternate story. A rarity amongst most Japanese Anime/manga. You'll like this if you like Naruto, One Piece, Gundam Wing 00, Pokemon, and DBZ. This is about Alchemy, a form of Chemistry of you Periodic table and what atoms each particles contain around them and gets used like wizardry. They must use their knowledge of what their surroundings are what base elements and turn them into weapons or elements of thunder, ice, fire, science, all mixed in there. Lots of deep solid story philosophy about life and some weird comedy but tolerable. I declare this to be "MASTER PIECE"! It's greatness will go down in history! It's guaranteed to be valuable classic DVD worth many $$$ in the future. I think people will rush to see remakes after 10-20 years of dormant. Just like all 1990s Zelda games will be popular high value in 2010.Read full review
As a grown woman, I feel a little silly liking what basically amounts to a 'cartoon' as much as I like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but it is such an incredibly well crafted (in both writing and artwork) story that I just can't help it. I’d seen a little of the first series years ago and liked it, but I don't follow anime very closely. Recently they started running episodes on [adult swim] and it wasn't until after watching a few episodes that I realized they'd made a whole new series. This new series, called ‘Brotherhood’ to differentiate it from the one that was done in 2003, came out in Japan in 2009 and is said to be closer to the books than the first series was. Well, I never read the books, but FMA: Brotherhood is an amazing story! During the past few weeks I have screamed through the entire series, including the latest ones that are only available with subtitles and I am dying to tell someone, anyone!, about it. Believe me, FMA:Brotherhood is LEAGUES better than what I saw of the original series - almost as if that one was a rough draft and this one is the brilliant final product. Even if you’ve never considered anime before, check this one out. I’m definitely not an anime groupie like the kids today can be, (all we had was Starblazers - does that date me?) but I really think even folks who don't generally like anime WILL like this one. It's just too well done (by several orders of magnitude!) for someone not to like it.Read full review
Excellent anime that is worth watching multiple times. The DVD set doesn't have much in the way of extra features, however. I love the show, but I also would have loved to see more special features as a part of the DVD release.
This new series takes the storyline of original manga all the way to the end. If you compare the previous FMA anime and original manga, you'll notice a few difference. The anime had their own original ending. Which wasn't that bad. But I personally like the manga storyline better. And that's why I feel this new anime series is better than the previous!
