I first bought my first ABU closed faced style 50-odd years ago and have used this type ever since. Recently purchased a 506 and 507 for my son who has taken up fishing recently enthusiastically at the age of 25. The closed face ABU is my favourite style and would not use anything else.

The line pick up mechanism has a tendency to malfunction, when turning the handle after casting the line pick up pin remains in it's housing and does not engage the line this has happened numerous times when fishing on the river. I have owned a Premier 704 closed face reel for a number of years and there is no problem with this. I will not be buying any more Abu closed face reels I am very disappointed with this reel.

Had the original ABU 506 and when the latest ABU 506 came on the market had to save up for one, great for trotting and also still water fishing when its raining and using light line does not stick to the rod.

Nicely made except for the plastic spools which rely on tiny pushed-in brass studs to operate the drag and line level functions. One of them pulled out. A shame - penny pinching and poor design (how long have ABU been making reels?) spoils a good product.

Have used ABU reels for a very long time and owned an original 506 years ago. When I decided to return to using a 506 I was sceptical about the quality of the latest model. I need not have worried the new model has retained the very high standard of the old model. A high quality piece of kit
