This is a one hour snapshot of what Maynard Ferguson can do for a concert. This band from the early 70s is a blend of his english/ western Europe band and some American players. This band played many genres, and did it well. Maynard shows off his range playing I'm Getting Sentimental Over You. There's some fast tempo Bop playing on Two For Otis and some very funky grooves on Nice N' Juicy. Bruce Johnston (Bari Sax) and Ferdinand Povel (tenor sax) provide many good solos. Maynard Band fans from the 70s should have this, even if you have the old two-set LP. The transfer is very good, cleaning up a few problems on the original, but some of that cheezy reverb is still there. I still enjoy listening to this concert for almost 40 years now. tb
I have been waiting for this release to come out on CD for a long time. It was an early Ferguson favorite of mine with a great mix of material featuring soloing virtuosity from various members of the band as well as Maynard himself that proved inspirational to me in the 70's to propel my own experiences in jazz and ad libitum soloing. It is as inspirational to me today as it was 30 years ago when I first heard it on LP. It includes one of my all-time favorite live Maynard productions of MacArthur Park, as well as Fox Hunt. If you love a screaming trumpet from one of the all-time masters of the high range, and appreciate the abilities of various styles and solos in a contemporary jazz style, this CD is for you. All of the solos are exceptional. that is one thing about Maynard: he picked his bandmates well. The ensemble is extremely talented and this CD is a very enjoyable trip back just a few years prior to his "Rocky" days.Read full review
I abolutely love this album! I first heard it when I was a teenager playing trombone in my highschools jazz ensemble. Maynard had performed at our school, and we were all psyched about his music. This album captures that live experience and all of Maynards intensity. This recording is a lesson in Jazz... a must have for aficianados.
I love this Album by Maynard Ferguson. I own it on vinyl and wanted to get a scratch free CD recording in my collection. I must say I am less then satisfied what Wounded Bird has done with this recording. It has been poorly re-mastered and in very compressed and flat sounding compared to the original. It lack's dynamic range and sound very brittle.
One of the best recordings in history.
