Works now but notoriously hard to setup
I had originally installed a Mikrotik RBL-HGG-60 pair over 1430 metres. They were very easy to install, point at each other as best you could then use the direction lights on each unit to fine tune. Very robust signal and no great setup issues. Only problem, when it rains moderately signal just collapses and you lose the link. So I bought the Ubiquiti AirMAX as it has an automatic 5Gig backup radio for when the 60g signal drops and signals below 6 Gig are not really affected by normal rain and they are quoted as useable up to 2000 metres. I got a 5 Gig signal straight away but nothing on 60 Gig. The 5 Gig was marginal but there. After a lot of adjustment, at both ends, the 60 Gig signal came up at about -65 dBm and every effort to improve it resulted in it failing. After a huge amount ... I got a 5 Gig signal straight away but nothing on 60 Gig. The 5 Gig was marginal but there. After a lot of adjustment, at both ends, the 60 Gig signal came up at about -65 dBm and every effort to improve it resulted in it failing. After a huge amount of time and effort I was finally able to get the signal to -62dBm and it now hovers between -59 and -62dBm which is an MCS of 8 or more which is great. There are a lot of little tricks, I have learnt, setting this up but require too much detail for this review. Only issue is that the best I can get the 5 Gig signal is around -72 without compromising the 60 Gig. At that the MCS is about 3 to 4 which is not spectacular at all. To get that signal you have to turn off "Calculate EIRP for Backup Radio", at both ends and set maximum allowable power. You will also have to try a number of frequencies and preferably select a DFS enabled one. Unfortunately, as with most Ubiquiti products, none of this is explained and you have to trawl through forums to get any help. I would like to experiment more but am reluctant, after all the issues, for fear of losing signal, again, and having to spend another two days of work getting it back. Haven't had bad weather again, yet, so I cannot make comment on the 5Gig fallback, but when I was setting it up and didn't have a 60 Gig link, I was getting throughputs of over 120 Mbps on lesser signals than I have now so I am hopeful. Also will be interested what impact rain has on the 5 Gig signal. Its an exciting product with a lot of potential but not for the faint hearted. I also believe you need to consider buying the 60 Gig precision adjustment mounts for anything over about 500 metres but they will add about 50% to the price. I think if Mikrotik had a dual band product of a similar type and price, I would definitely choose theirs over the Ubiquiti.
