About this product

Product Information

NOW AN ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATED FILM STARRING VIGGO MORTENSEN So good that it will devour you. It is incandescent Daily Telegraph A father and his young son walk alone through burned America, heading slowly for the coast. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. They have nothing but a pistol to defend themselves against the men who stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food - and each other. PRAISE FOR THE ROAD A masterpiece that will soon be considered a classic Herald McCarthy conjures from this pitiless flight the miracle of unswerving humanity. Gripping beyond belief Chris Cleave, Sunday Telegraph One of the most shocking and harrowing but ultimately redemptive books I have read. It is an intensely intimate story. It is also a warning Kirsty Wark, Observer Books of the Year You will read on, absolutely convinced, thrilled, mesmerized. All the modern novel can do is done here Alan Warner, Guardian The first great masterpiece of the globally warmed generation. Here is an American classic which, at a stroke, makes McCarthy a contender for the Nobel Prize for Literature Andrew O'Hagan

  • About More Than The Sum Of Its Parts.

This book is in a sense about a journey, but its meat lies between its movements and actions. The best part of this book is the sense of gravity given to the loss of the human condition. The odd moments of quintessential parental love mixed with the hulking dread of imminent danger, those moments are the highlight of this book and they are heart-breakingly genuine. For anyone thats read this and is just curious as to the thoughts of others; think about that coke can moment. I read somewhere McCarthy was inspired to write this book when he was on a father son trip with his then young son, and had wondered what it would be like to be put into this kind of world with a child. The notion of what would you do. Not being a parent myself I can only imagine how emotionally touching a read this ...

Such a well written story. Not the longest book and easy to get through on a lazy weekend then watch the movie.

  • Just no

The cover doesn't match with the photo. I wanted it just for the cover, for my collection. I've read it online already. Disappointed..

  • The work of a master.

With an enduring testament to descriptive prose McCarthy drags his readers across the underside of a devastated depleted post apocalyptic landscape driven by a suspended sense of hope that his two central characters will arrive at a better than predicted outcome. His genre skates between fictional adventure and horror while establishing the notion that the fire inside each of us will prevail.
