È il 1942. La guerra imperversa e la Francia è divisa a metà. Burma si trova a Marsiglia, per un curioso incarico. Deve infatti intrufolarsi in casa di una nota ballerina per rubare le lettere compromettenti inviatele dall'amante. Non proprio tutto va liscio, ma Burma riesce a incassare la parcella e prendere il treno per rientrare nella sua Parigi occupata. Peccato che, arrivato nella capitale, sul suo stesso convoglio venga scoperto il cadavere di un suo sosia. O meglio, di qualcuno che potrebbe essere stato scambiato per Burma dall'assassino. Tutto questo per qualche lettera d'amore? La polizia decide di fingere che Burma sia effettivamente morto e lui, incapace di tenersi fuori dai guai, medita di tornare a Marsiglia per capire un po' meglio quella strana vicenda. Ma passare le linee non è facile, per questo si rivolge a un amico psichiatra e si fa rinchiudere in una sorta di manicomio che di fatto organizza viaggi in zona "nono".
