E' autunno, fa freddo a Oslo e le nubi corrono nel cielo. Infine, all'improvviso, cade la prima foglia. Il vento la trascina via, facendola salire e poi di nuovo precipitare sotto gli occhi attenti di Herman. Anche lui, molto presto, si sentirà come un albero senza foglie. L'approfondimento psicologico del protagonista da parte dell'autore è davvero magistrale. Le turbolenze dell'animo di Herman, i suoi sentimenti sono sondati con grande delicatezza.
