Trayless 2.5" SATA 3 Hotswap Bays
The unit fits in a 3.5" external bay (where most computers had a Floppy drive at one time). Within that space it hold 2 2.5" SATA3 drives and it supports more than just slim drives. I have the two bays connected to a PCIe SATA3 controller. I noticed when I inserted one drive it reset the bus for both with this configuration so be careful about removing and inserting a drive while the other is busy if connected this way. The two cables that come with it are required if you want the drive activity lights to work. The lights a nice blue LED when inserted and blink red when active - a nice feature knowing which drive is being accessed. Also in the box was two plastic adhesive films to place on the bottom of the drives you plan to use to prevent the possibility of the drive shorting against the ... I've had another drive in it that didn't have the plastic however it's electronics were above the metal sides - some drives are flush. It's simple to install and easy to use. I'm running a 1TB drive in both bays and have not had any issue with heat. It's a good design even without external vents for air flow. The eject mechanisms are metal so there shouldn't be any issue with them failing. It's great to not have to open the case just to change a drive. It's a good choice if you want to backup your system and pull the disk(s) for storage. They could also be configured as a mirror set if supported by your controller (I wouldn't recommend software RAID). Overall it's an excellent product for the price and I'm considering getting another one.

Extra power jumpers are provided to make up to either SATA or old style power plugs in your chassis. The one weakness is that there is a plate at the base of each drive slot and it is metal - i.e. conductive, and most non SSD 2.5" drives have exposed circuits on the bottom. Startech provides adhesive cover sheets for the 1st two drives you decide to use, after that you are on your own to insure you don't accidentally fry a drive with exposed circuits. Of course a few minutes and some insulating tape fixes this well enough but an omission in an otherwise good ... Best SATA Rack for 2 drives with separate cables for each drive. Avoid buying the similar covered rack with only one cable, as the single cable unit may not work with your PC.
