Though I am not especially fond of the modern incarnation of D&D (certain thematic and design flaws continue to haunt this game even after 30 years), I found myself pleasantly surprised with D20 modern. Although its mechanics are virtually the same as those used in D&D (Editions 3.0 and 3.5, anyway...I've yet to experience 4.0 for myself), D20 Modern makes better use of the character class concept than any of its predecessors. In D20 Modern, flexibility is the key: multi-classing and customization are easy as you please, allowing players to create the type of characters they actually want to play, as opposed to being forced to "settle" on a character class that doesn't necessarily capture what the player was hoping to create. D20 Modern also proceeds from the very outset with the idea that the rules must work in multiple campaign settings, some with vastly differing design theories, and the book even includes a few abbreviated campaign settings to illustrate this flexibility. In addition, all the bells and whistles of fantasty and sci-fi gaming are touched upon herein: magic, psionics, firepower, high-tech gadgets...what a terrific toybox! The organization of the core rulebook is a trifle bewildering at times, but D20 Modern is a terrific gaming engine with a solid design stance. You'll probably want to pick up the Menace Manual supplement to populate your game with well-balanced foes, but for the most part, the D20 Modern book is surprisingly complete and highly functional.Read full review
This game has a lot of good features in it going from the talents trees in your classes, to the wide range of items you can buy. My only real issue is the monetary system....you have to roll a check to see if you can buy something. now there is a page out there that did a decent conversion from this system to a dollar/gold system. Overall I still find it a good system. :)

D20 Modern was published by Wizards Of The Coast in 2002 I believe. Sadly that line was discontinued after the company was bought out by Hasbro along with other game lines they've done. Based of Palladium's house system D20 was more streamlined but mostly stuck with Dungeons & Dragons which wasn't good if you loved D20 but hated fantasy. D20 Modern was the start of a line that would separate this system from it's setting and making it much more applicable to others, in this case modern times. It's well written the names aren't to creative but you can easily just call them all by something else, and provides a very versatile game due mainly to other installments being completely modular meaning you could take them or leave them. In summation D20 can be a fun system, various independent companies made their own settings for it, you just need this and whatever installment mentioned and you can play it.Read full review
Arrived early and well packaged. The cover was taped and slightly more worn than I expected but everything else about it is perfect. I am very happy with my purchase!

This is a great book similar to Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition. If you want Characters set in the modern world this is the way to go. I also bought the D20 Modern Apocalypse to go with it. I'm very happy to be playing D20 modern and i highly recommend it
