It can't breathe...
These oxygen absorbers are excellent for removing oxygen from sealed packages. I use them in my 5 gallon mylar bags. It's really quite amazing to see how much more compressed the package gets after a week being sealed with an absorber inside. Of course, it works faster if all or most of the air is removed from the bag before sealing. That is very important. The key to ensure the absorbers are effective is to use the right amount of cc's for the volume and content. If you use 2000cc's on a 5 gallon mylar bag containing cereal, it most likely won't be effective in absorbing most of the oxygen (since cereal has a lot of air in it) as a 5 gallon mylar bag of flour which is more dense and doesn't have as much air in it.
