About this product

Product Information

ONE OF TIME 'S TEN MOST IMPORTANT NONFICTION BOOKS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY In the searing pages of this classic autobiography, originally published in 1964, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and anti-integrationist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Black Muslim movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American Dream, and the inherent racism in a society that denies its nonwhite citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time. The Autobiography of Malcolm X stands as the definitive statement of a movement and a man whose work was never completed but whose message is timeless. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand America. Praise for The Autobiography of Malcolm X "Extraordinary . . . a brilliant, painful, important book." -- The New York Times "This book will have a permanent place in the literature of the Afro-American struggle." --I. F. Stone

"The most important book I'll ever read, it changed the way I thought; it changed the way I acted. It has given me courage I didn't know I had inside me. I'm one of hundreds of thousands whose lives were changed for the better." --Spike Lee   "Extraordinary . . . a brilliant, painful, important book." -- The New York Times   "A great book . . . Its dead level honesty, its passion, its exalted purpose, will make it stand as a monument to the most painful truth." -- The Nation   "This book will have a permanent place in the literature of the Afro-American struggle." --I. F. Stone From the Hardcover edition., "Malcolm X's autobiography seemed to offer something different. His repeated acts of self-creation spoke to me; the blunt poetry of his words, his unadorned insistence on respect, promised a new and uncompromising order, martial in its discipline, forged through sheer force of will." --Barack Obama, Dreams from My Father "Extraordinary . . . a brilliant, painful, important book." -- The New York Times   "A great book . . . Should be REQUIRED reading for ALL

Many people of all races have called this book their "wake-up call" and now I join them! This is a book about an incredible MAN 1st, from beginning to end. Some are afraid of being preached to , that is NOT what this book is about...it's funny, exciting and uplifting and written in a way friends speak to each other. You NEED this book in ways you'll only understand after reading it. I read it every three years and ,unfortunately, it is ALWAYS timely.

  • Greatest BOOK I've ever read!

This book is truly one of the best books I've ever read, in my entire life. It's probably evident from the first day, when I read over 100 pages. From beginning to end cover, it captures the entire life of Malcolm X, good and bad. From his upbringings in Omaha, Nebraska, to Lansing, Michigan, to his departure to Roxbury, Massachusetts, Harlem, New York, and obviously his work during the civil rights movement, every aspect of his life is captured in a way that only fans of Malcolm X could understand. I bought this book as a recommendation from my brother, who told me reading it would "change my life and the way I viewed it". Of course I didn't believe him, but I bought the book (from eBay for the low price of $4) just to give it a try. The way Malcolm X conducts the autobiography, the words ...

  • The Autobiography of Malcolm X, revisited

The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Al Hajj Malik Shabazz; is straight forward book. This book shows the power of the human spirit, and the good that is in everyone, to transcend negative and demeaning life circumstances, and to attain a righteous, and worthwhile life living in fear of the Creator. This is whether you call that Creator God, or Allah SWT. Malcolm X, came from a disastrous family history, that not only destroyed his family, his faith, and his belief in the possibility of goodness in life. Not withstanding, all of this eliminated his hope for better in his future. He was told, he could only hope to live a marginal life, so he did. That was until he heard the message from someone who helped, him establish feelings of goodness and potential in himself. And don't many need this ...

  • Great read

Such a great book,so much to witness through Mr.Shabazz'eyes.Very gritty at times but history should be honest especially with tragedy. He tells his story so well at times you think your sitting in the room with him listening to his life.
