In this thriller from director Michael Bay (PEARL HARBOR, ARMAGEDDON), survivors of global contamination live in a sterile, self-contained world where their every move is monitored. The rules are easy: be pleasant, refrain from asking questions, and don't rock the boat. Everything they need is provided for them, from the white uniforms that magically appear in their closets, to their customized cafeteria-style meals. The survivors all eagerly await their big payoff: winning the lottery and being sent to The Island, the only remaining untainted land in the world. But Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) yearns for more from his life and begins to wonder what really lies outside the thick walls. When his best friend, Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johansson), wins the lottery, he knows that he has to find out the truth about their world before she departs. What he finds is terrifying enough to send Lincoln and Jordan fleeing from the facility to the real world where they quickly discover that they are clones, and that both The Island and global contamination are a ruse. The clones sole purpose is to be harvested for replacement parts when their sponsors need them. With his business now in jeopardy, Dr. Merrick (Sean Bean), the founder of the cloning company, hires a crack team led by Albert Laurent (Djimon Hounsou) to track down his escaped product. Wild chase scenes through Los Angeles circa 2050 are punctuated by high-tech transportation as Lincoln and Jordan run for their lives and try to assimilate into a world that is completely foreign to them. The futuristic set design and visual effects are particularly impressive. McGregor and Johansson both expertly communicate the human element and desire for life that has developed in the two clones, while still finding humor and awe in their childlike naivety.

Exciting and Entertaining
I gave it one more star than Roger Ebert, I thoroughly enjoyed it enough to buy a copy for my home library. Of the various Ewan McGregor movies I have seen this is my favorite. He fits the role perfectly. The movie actually seems like it should be a double-feature. The second half of the movie his high-tech and action-packed. The first half being like a creepy science movie like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". I've seen the movie about 4 times and usually I don't like repeat watching. Not only will sci-fi fans love this film but conspiracy theorists will love it as well. This movie has a great concept and is full of attention grabbing action sequences and special effects. I mean c'mon, its a Michael Bay film so if you enjoyed Bad Boys, Amargeddon or his most recent Transformers - you will love this one. Imagine being able to extend your life by using a clone, where if you get sick and need a new kidney you could take one from your clone; this is the basis of the film. But it takes a drastic turn when the clones realize whats going on and want freedom; this is when this movie is full of hard hitting action. Great! Pretty slick and at the same time, a pretty scary movie when you consider present day scientific advances. With all of these people living in a self-contained environment to escape what has been said is a global contamination, none of these people know that they are clones. Artificial replacement parts for their sponsors; you know, spare livers, kidneys, hearts, and anything else that might wear out. The problem is, these people, clones or not, have to die for these parts to be harvested. They all live in anticipation of winning the lottery, which is supposedly a permanent trip to the "Island", a fantasy unspoiled place where the contamination doesn't exist. In reality, they have been killed for parts or organs needed by their sponsors. This is the best kept secret in the world. Without ... Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johansson) are friends. She is the beautiful clone of the most popular porn actress in the world. Lincoln has made friends with one of the staff and has figured out how to secretly get into several restricted areas. One day he finds a large moth. Having never seen anything like this before, and not seeing how anything could be still alive due to the contamination, he shows it to Jordan. Suddenly she wins the Lottery - She is going to the Island. Lincoln is worried, and later that day while doing a little exploration, finds himself in an area where he witnesses organs being harvested from a man who had supposedly gone off to the Island. Now he has figured out that something is dreadfully wrong. He tells Jordan about what he found out and the two of them escape. As it turns out, this place is built in a large underground missile syloh. Once out, they have no idea what is happening, having had no experience with living anywhere except in a totally controlled environment. The management has a real problem and must prevent any leak of information about this place. Special Consultants (with guns and orders to contain at all cost) are now after them. Lincoln looks his friend from inside and he reluctantly helps them and explains what they must do to survive. Lincoln's sponsor lives in LA, and the plan is to get both on Television and tell all about this place and what is going on there. The problem is Lincoln is his clone, and he is going to die of liver failure in less than two years, so he only pretends to help. Jordan's sponsor has been in an auto accident and is dying, in need of several organs. There is a very violent chase and the plot is full of twists and turns. The ending is most surprising. This movie is a far-fetched premise, but the idea, although far surpassing stem-cell technology, seems to be a possible eventual destination. Good movie!

Why did I wait to rent this one?
This film is really good. I have seen simular films but this one seemed to keep my interest. I did not understand why somethings happened but that could be explained as humans are flawed. They are the ones who program machines. I would hate to be the programmer that put flaws in that system in the film. If there was any mention of this charecter in the film it would have been an excellent film. The film gave a scary outlook into the future. Is this the only facility doing this? The creaters of the facility would have to be F- students in school with little brain tissue left to not have backed up the research somewhere else. A highschool student could use a database and with a book or too could create a database of their own.This film is really good. I have seen simular films but this one seemed to keep my interest. Typical Michael Bay Movie
The Island is Michael Bay's latest explosion filled offering. Its set in the future where rich people pay to have themselves cloned to help extend their lives. It stars Ewan Mcgregor and Scarlet Johansson who both turn in decent performances amid the repetitive car chases, shootouts, and explosions. The movie opens with McGregor and Johansson living idyllic but controlled lives in an enclosed facility. Every facit of their lives are monitored right down to their diet. The highlight of their lives is the lottery where if they win they are supposedly allowed to leave the island. Macgregor soon starts to have his doubts about his society. He confides in Johansson and Steve Buscemi who plays a repairman; Buscemi is excellent as usual. Eventually Macgregor discovers that the clones are ... The second half of the film is just silly chase after chase. Overall this is an average film that had a lot of potential but just fell flat after things started blowing up. A similar but better film is Logan's Run. It was released in 1976 and starred Michael York and Richard Jordan, with Farrah Fawcett in a supporting role. While the special effects are cheesy by today's standards the story is darker and the acting is better.
