About this product

Product Information

The NES sleeper hit River City Ransom, which integrated role-playing elements with side-scrolling combat, makes its Game Boy Advance debut with a number of enhancements. Cast in the role of teenagers Alex or Ryan, players must fight to reclaim River City High School from a gang led by a dangerous character named Slick. Yet before the teens can reach the school, they must first deal with River City's thugs and riffraff looking to "educate" them in the ways of the street. Both lead characters will be able to punch, kick, climb surrounding structures, perform team-up moves, as well as throw weapons or even other enemies.

What sets River City Ransom EX apart from similar beat-'em-ups is its character development system. Players earn coins for defeating enemies and can use this money to purchase food, apparel, or other items to increase certain attributes, such as jumping, weapon proficiency, health, and more. Featured game modes include Story, playable alone or cooperatively with a friend, and Battle, which pits two custom characters against one another. Solo players can also link two handhelds together: one to play the game and the other to use as a display for character stats and level progress. A character's special techniques and various other data can further be customized to trade with players.

    Great Game

One of the best beat em ups around. This is a hidden gem for the gba consoles. Must have in your gba library. This game is short but the replay value is good. Many secrets and hidden shops.

  • River City in your hand.

First off, let me say I'm a huge fan of the original NES title. Also, let me admit that the cartridge I bought on ebay did not include the game manual. With that in mind, lets look at the Gameboy advance title. The game starts off with a simple looking, yet clumsy start up menu. Without the manual, I'm actually sort of lost; looking at the unfamiliar options offered before the game starts: Allies:4? Enemies:4? What is that all about? Also, it would appear that if you wish to continue a previously played game, you have to manually load it at this point...I think. Also, if Ryan(or Alex) is fighting along side you, his stats must be loaded as well. At least I don't have to contend with a lengthy password. Ok, so I start, and I find the enemies are much more evasive and cowardly than I ...

  • Not Quite The Origional

This is an exellent remake of the side scrolling beat-em up for the NES. If you havent played the origional, it's a side scrolling fighter in the same vien as games such as Double Dragon. However, it is a more humerous game and ups the ante with a progressive RPG style stats system. This remakes provides a wealth of new features, such as additional moves, weapons and unlockable characters. However, something seems missing compared to the origional game. Unless you're a huge fan of the origional such as myself, I don't see most people getting the full experience out of the game.

  • Classic NES game

This version of RCR really took me back. When I was young, maybe 9 years old, my parents didn't want to dish out $40-50 on Double Dragon 2, so I instead picked RCR for $20, knowing absolutely nothing about the game. In hindsight, Double Dragon II turned out to be pretty lame & River City Ransom I would say was the best NES game outside of Super Mario 3! The things that stick out are the game play, the humorous little things the enemies say as they are taking an absolute beat-down from alex & ryan, and the way Alex stuffs food down his throat (plate & all) without the faintest sign of chewing...and he eats his drinks as well. Who can forget Alex's cartoon ass in the sauna? Hand's down a Top 3 NES game. Only downfall was this game was almost as short as it was sweet.

  • It's better than you remember it being.

Perhaps I am a nostalgic old fool but to me River City Ransom EX is 32 bits of sheer awesomeness. One of my favourite old school nes games remade and, dare I say it, improved. Whenever I show these street punks the horror of javelin man and the speed of dragon kick I cannot help a grin forming on my face. From one ear to the other. With the inclusion of more moves and choices for editing characters this old gem shines anew. If ever I meet the people from Atlus I doubt much could stop me from delivering a great big hug of appreciation. Anyone picking this game up for the first time might wonder what the appeal is, I could understand that. If ever you played and loved the old nes title, this is the stone hand that will punch a fist full of joy right into your solar plexus, leaving nothing ...
