About this product

Product Information

With Malena, Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore spins a romantic coming-of-age yarn about love, loss, and courage. Set in 1941 in a tiny village in Sicily, the film focuses on a group of 13-year-old boys who fall madly in love with Malena (Monica Bellucci), the wife of a local soldier. One of the boys, Renato Amoroso (Giuseppe Sulfaro), a dreamer who yearns for freedom from his war-bound village, revels in the exquisite beauty of the enchanting newcomer. He becomes her shadow, following her through the cobble stone streets and spying on her most intimate moments, overwhelmed with romantic longing for the first time. Malena has a magical spellbinding effect on the male villagers; her presence inspires fantasy and escape from their daily lives. But the women of the village, hardened by war, are quick to judge the nubile outsider. Malena becomes the focus of desire and seething jealousy in the town and she is eventually forced to face the female villagers in a bittersweet climax. Reminiscent of Federico Fellini's nostalgic masterpiece AMARCORD, native Sicilian Tornatore revisits the dusty village streets of his childhood where adolescent boys learn about sex, desire, and ultimately, love. Like Tornatore's critically acclaimed CINEMA PARADISO, he bathes the film in the sun-drenched light of his homeland, giving it a dreamy, earthy sensuality and a poetic spirit. Bellucci is a delicious revelation, the camera lingers seductively on her bewitching beauty. Inspired by the story MA L'AMORE NO... by Luciano Vincenzoni.

Beautifully filmed and well acted. A simple plot about people in wartime, perceptions, weakness and decisions that one must make to survive

  • A film with a message

Just for the view of "Bellucci"is worth any male’s time. Like any small town in America when rumors run rapid, there will soon be hell to pay for someone. Like most gossip, very little is true if any. An excellent job was done by "Monica Bellucci" in her roll as Malena; at times you almost felt the pain she was going through. This film had a great part for a boy of 14 or 15, but at 12 years old I'm not buying that bull. This film had some very strong subjects about life in it's self.

  • Classy, beautiful, sad. This film will remain part of my life.

Even outside of Monica Bellucci -she is at her best- the story and the players are outstanding. There is lots of sadness, many moments to think why, there is Etruscan beauty.

  • A beautiful movie

This is a beautiful movie with a beautiful score by Ennio Morricone. Visually, it is stunning, not simply for Monica Bellucci, but the look of the movie is perfect and rich. It is sometimes marketed as a comedy...and it is sometimes very funny...but it is quite more than a comedy, giving your mind much to think about. Monica Bellucci and Giuseppe Sulfaro are perfectly cast.

  • Malena

Do NOT be put off by Italian subtitles; the subtitles are almost invisible - but might well be an excellent opportunity to learn Italian.... Malena is a gorgeous film. Guiseppe Tornatore is a magnificent director. Ennio Morricone is a fabulous composer. Monica Belucci is beyond beautiful. Put them all together in an Italy ravished by the thrust of Facism under Mussolini and you have one hell of a film. I have watched it over and over and it never fails to offer something new. The cinematography is outstanding. Just watch Belucci walk through town, never deigning to glance at her many admirers, all to the remarkable music of Morricone. If you can't love this film, your soul may well be dead....
