Ummm... Interesting, But Biased Book About James Dean
Yes, I did find it entertaining and well written... BUT, I feel that the author Paul Alexander went to great lengths to set forth his case that James Dean was a homosexual, saying in this biography that Jimmy Dean's romances with women were, mostly, fabrications by his Studio's publicity department, casual platonic friendships or smoke-screens to deny his own true nature. Well... I have read too many other fine accounts of James Dean's life, among them--- Val Holley's " James Dean--- The Biography", Donald Spoto's " Rebel : The Legend and Times of James Dean", George Perry's pictorial biography of James Dean, Joe Hyman's " James Dean : Little Boy Lost ", Liz Sheridan's " Dizzy and Jimmy : A Love Story "... They, and other materials, caused me to conclude that he was ---bisexual. Paul ... Yes, I did find it entertaining and well written... Paul Alexander skims lightly over Jimmy Dean's obviously heterosexual romances with Dizzy Sheridan, a sweet early pairing when James Dean first started to become a professional actor that was the basis for her book ( It really has the ring of the truth about it. ), and Barbara Glenn, plus Christine White, and his later touching romance with Pier Angeli. ( He asked Dizzy Sheridan to marry him. He also asked Brabara Glenn. And, Jimmy very much wanted to marry Pier Angeli. But, none of it happened, for one reason or another... ) Pier Angeli said many times after his death, wistfully, that she had never loved either of her husbands the way a woman should love a man, the way she loved James Dean. Apparently, she went on and on about her love for Jimmy. " Boulevard Of Broken Dreams " is much too much a support case for James Dean's sexuality, rather than a balanced biography containing other facts of his life. It states that in the Fall of 1951 to Fall 1952 James Dean led a wild and kinky gay life, but there is absolutely no proof of this. And, as to that infamous, blurry photo in the back of the book that claims to be Jimmy Dean sitting naked in a tree--- Donald Spoto brings out in his biography " Rebel : The Life and Legend Of James Dean" that it IS NOT a photo of Jimmy Dean, but a snap taken in 1957 as a cruel joke. The photo is actually a picture of a retarded cousin, who has since died, of a man named Richard Laselle. However, apparently, there DOES EXIST a photo of Jimmy Dean sitting naked in a tree, as reported in the biography " James Dean" by Val Holley. The photo was part of a series of photos of naked famous men. It and the series has never been published.
