The Hope
In the tradition of Herman Woulk this is a panaromanic, longitudinal novel about the birth of the political state of Israel. Only Woulk could write the complex characters of passion and itensity that runs parallel with the life and death struggle of Israel's fight for its right existence. This story covers the time period from 1948 fight for freedom to the 1967 Six Day War. As Israel's struggle for its very existance unfolds, so do the lives and loves of the main characters. You meet the young man who had fled the Holocaust in Europe, arriving on a boat from Cyprus and steps into the battle for Latrum and on to Jerusalem, and the sabra, a native born freedom fighter, who are part of the patchwork that of people who will become the heart and soul of Israel. "Next time at Jerusalem", becomes a reality, rather than a burdened prayer. Within in its pages, its many characters bring to life forgotten memories that almost seem to be people you and I once knew. Herman Wouk portrays these characters in all of their humanity -with ... This book is definitely a "must read" for every student of history, whether zealous or casual, especially for those interested in Israeli History!
