This is the best looking low profile and light weight DVD player I have seen on the market. It plays everything flawlessly including my DivX files, which have several built in subtitles, which the unit automatically detects. My only quirk with this is that certain high compression DivX files are slightly choppy because the onboard decoder cannot handle the bitrate. However, this is only a minor issue if you are playing high compression DivX files in the 700MB+ range. Anything below in the 300MB range plays without a hitch. DVD's play flawlessly as decoding those is not as much of an issue as the DivX files. My only quirk is with the remote, which looks is not as ergonomic as most remotes and has a bland key layout. In addition, the motor that spins the CD's and the laser light track is very noisy if you are watching DVD's with the volume at low. If you play your movies loud, the speakers will drown out the gear motion. However, my unit was a refurb so that may be why the gears are so noisy. If it were not for that, this unit would get a 5/5 for quality and price.Read full review
i had a problem the other day. my favorite band the moody blues had just had a dvd released covering the whole history of the band. sounds great, right? wrong, it was only released in the u.k. and would not play on my bought in the u.s.a. player. and when i shopped around the stores in my area none of them sold a player that would play anything released outside the united states. so the solution to my problem was this great inexpensive little player. all i had to do was plug it in program one command and it plays my new dvd and several other dvds that i have bought from the u.k. and germany. for the price of an dvd you will have a great looking player that works and sounds well, great.
This DVD player plays any disc. It is amazing. I struggled with a used Sony that was so sensitive I started ordering VCR tapes just to have ease. I am totally happy, Thank you.

I bought this DVD player for me and my family for movie nights. It is slim and hardly takes up any room on my entertainment center. It is easy to use and comes with several features. I do need to read instruction book, but I haven't really had the time. There was one time when a disc got stuck in the system, but I was able to get it out. All in all, we are very happy with this product.
This is one exceptional DVD player. It has been on the market for quite some time now, earning the title 'old and venerable' on many sites, and for good reason. With only a few exceptions, this player will play everything you can throw at it. VCD, MP3 DVD, DivX, photo CD, hybrid CD, any format of recordable, plays without a hitch. The remote is not as intuitive as some, but it is easy enough to get used to. The output is exceptional. The unit is durable, with few complaints about repairs or breakdowns. It is slim and physically attractive, has enough on-unit controls to allow you to operate the device without the remote. It is quiet and relatively cool running - it does not draw attention to itself in enclosed areas like entertainment centers. It is priced more reasonably than a whole lot of other units that won't perform half as well or play half as much. This is a universally highly regarded player that will handle the playback requirements of all but the most advanced enthusiasts, and won't break the bank while doing it. It is difficult if not impossible to come up with any real complaints about this unit, especially when considering it in the context of the other players in it's price range.Read full review
This player will play ANYTHING recognized by windows media player and will read files from BOTH CDs AND DVDs. Some DIVX players will not load DIVX files from a DVD. This is the best player you can get for such a small price! I've bought one for myself and a few for others. You can obtain movies in DIVX format however you may and then burn 6 or 7 on 1 DVD! A movie is roughly 700MB and a DVD holds 4.7 gigs. If you are wondering if an 8GB DVD will work with this, it won't. I tried. But I have burned multiple seasons of shows such as Seinfeld, South Park, Family Guy, and I can usually fit 2 whole seasons on 1 DVD! I cannot express enough how great this product is. It pretty much enables you to take any media files from your CPU and play them on your TV. DIVX quality is usually just as good as DVD quality as well. You cannot tell the difference. Read so many good reviews, I purchased 2 of these! Have had them for a few months now and not a single problem :o) Easy to set up, easy to use, plays everything it says it does and it has great menu options (which include Parental Lockouts on movie ratings). A bit noisier than some of the other players I've had, but really not bad at all (I have it in an entertainment center about 10' from my couch and I don't hear it at all when I'm on the couch watching a movie). An excellent value for your money!!
Ok. I have to admit, the thing is awesome. I haven't found a disc that this thing won't play. VCD. DVD MP3 CD movies saved as data files....you name it....and its DivX compatible....I love the thing....I think the only thing i would caution against is being swindled into paying more for a "region free" version of this product. because all tey do is enter a code for you or send you the instructions to do it yourself with your remote to play any region discs. with just a little poking around on the internet you can find this code for free...just google "region free code DVP642" and i'm sure you will get many hits. and also it automatically comes ready to play both NTSC and PAL formats without any codes or alteration. So buy wisely....dont pay more for what you dont need to pay for....other than that L*O*V*E****T*H*I*S****D*V*D***P*L*A*Y*E*R!!!!!!!!!!Read full review
I've owned two of these players. I have a lot of varied content and the Philips DVP642 plays almost everything. HINT: if you have an avi that seems pixelated, press the system menu button (not the DVD menu) and then press Close Menu. The problem goes away! (I stumbled across that one by accident.) I burned one out by letting it stay on Pause for several days -- the next time I used it, it made the cutest chirping sounds and refused to play anything. There are a lot of hacks out there that upgrade the firmware to give the unit more functionality. Like I read once, if you have DVD player problems, then go get a cheaper DVD player. This one is both inexpensive and just about perfect.
For the price, not bad. There aren't too many choices in region-free, PAL DVD players. This product, which is no longer manufactured, has been OK in my experience. While it works, it works pretty well. It plays some DVDs that my much more expensive Denon player will not. Why, I don't know. Over the past 6 years, approximately, I have had three of them. Eventually it goes kaput, most recently because of a bad power supply. After the used one I just bought dies I will see if there is anything newer, esp. if it also plays Blu Ray discs.
