The author Steven Strogatz was awarded prizes at MIT for excellence in teaching, a good reason to expect a good expository writing style. The book more than lived up to the anticipation. Strogatz takes the reader gently from elementary levels in differential systems into concepts and their relevance in a wide variety of physical applications. Topics are built on one another, as expected in a good exposition, reinforcing what's been taught. Illustrations accompany nearly everything discussed, so people with visual learning styles are not shortchanged. The book covers an impressive range of topics in differential equations with seeming ease, aided by a style that helps create intuition for the underlying technical points. Examples and problems abound, and references to material for deeper exploration are especially helpful where library resources are accessible.Read full review
It's a good book for people looking to build intuition in nonlinear systems. It is not a theorem-proof type of book. If you are looking for those, there are several others by say Springer-Velag... This book offers many insights into the geometry of the systems and can be read for fun!
I bought the book for a class. It has tons of information, it's clear and easy to understand. The book is definetely of great value.
although it lack rigorous mathematical proofs, this book is definitely good to explain the basic and more complex concepts in nonlinear dynamics.
