It could have done with some more editing. some of the early on scenes went on a bit long. The final two scenes should have been cut they cancel out the thunder of the battle scene.

Film was meant to be a classic, ended up almost bankrupting the studio. It is far too long. The original cut was 5 hours, but this cinemas version was 3 hours 48 minutes. Many scenes are to long and not relevant. Opening scenes at Harvard with people dancing around a tree lasted 40 minutes just to tell the audience that the Kristoferson and Hurt characters went there. No real relevance to the actual story. Director Cimino obviously liked big crowd scenes but there was so much background noise you could hardly hear what the lead actors were saying. A dance scene in a hall with Kristoferson and the leading lady going round and round and round to a country violin seemed endless and no relevance to the plot. The Walken and Hurt parts didn't seem to make much sense and not sure why they were there. Scenes where the characters are all speaking in their native languages - problem no subtitles. The final huge battle scene has so much smoke and dust it was impossible to see who was shooting who. The whole movie was just so poorly directed. it's no surprise it has ended up in so many "worst movie or biggest box office flops of all time. Read full review
