    great lense

    this canon 17-85mm IS AF USM is big and rather weighty at times, looks good and feels nice to hold and operate. from 24-50mm the lens will free fall if camera is upside down. that's not a big issue at all. great focal length and nice sharp pictures. I personally love this lens, BUT be ware I purchased a used one in very good condition but the AF I find hunts very badly. that's annoying at any time, there is either an issue with the lens or its very hard to spot focus in many situations. other wise highly recommended, that good I'm thinking of buying a bran new one!!!

    Design-flaw issues with this lens

    The flex cable design is apparently a known issue on this unit. The behaviour is this: in certain (actually most) settings, the camera shows an Error 01 when the shutter release is depressed. What is happening is the auto-focus does not work. Turning off auto-focus makes no difference. At this point, I can only use the lens for video. Repairing the flex cable will cost AUD$240, which is more than I paid for the lens.

    great lens for the beginner

    Digital photography was something I wanted to try. However I didn't want to pay a fortune to discover I'm useless.I picked up a nice 1000D body and needed a lens. This 17-85mm has auto focus and stabilizer. Perfect for the beginner. And it is perfect. I don't need to worry about the technical side of taking the picture just how to frame the content. Both body and lens work fantastically and I'm taking some good shots. I am now looking to upgrade my gear and ebay will be my first stop.

    Good lens but difficult and frustrating to fix error each time.

    Accepted that lens came with problem and purchased on that basis, but error came up more often than implied and very frustrating to resolve each time. When it worked it worked well and kept going until turned off. When it didn't work it was frustrating to try to get it working again. Would have been happier if sale price had been further reduced by another $20.
