Synopsis
This is the first comprehensive biography of Lavrentii Beria, Stalin's notorious police chief and for many years his most powerful lieutenant. Beria has long symbolized all the evils of Stalinism, haunting the public imagination both in the West and in the former Soviet Union. Yet because his political opponents expunged his name from public memory after his dramatic arrest and execution in 1953, little has been previously published about his long and tumultuous career.

  • Beria, a very ruthless man.

Very thorough background on Beria. Most accounts I have read tend to agree with what the author has written. Very refreshing to get a no nonsense accounting of this horrible horrible man, BUT after Stalin died was working to undo a lot of the tyrannical practices that he imposed. A commensurate politician, but he stepped on Khruschev's toes and got out maneuvered at the end. I wonder how different it would have been if Beria DID manage to replace Stalin.
