Review of PZ-E1 on the Canon 70D with Canon EF-S 18-135 Nano IS USM lens.

When used on my Canon 70-D, I like the smooth, quiet zooming that the PZ-E1 achieves with the 18-135 IS USM lens. It also attaches and comes off easily. I anticipate that it will be a staple in future short film shoots as it certainly beats manual zooming. I have no way of telling how much battery life I will get out of the four AAA alkaline batteries required to power the PZ-E1. But a preliminary look suggests that battery life will be excellent once field tested. I have two minor complaints: sometimes, I have to power my 70D off and on to get the PZ-E1 to function. Also, I was hoping that the "Slow" zoom setting would actually be slower than it is. I have a new Canon 80D camera in the box so will check those two concerns as soon as possible. It may be better because apparently the 18-135 IS USM lens was desgined with the 80D in mind and they are being sold as companion sets in the kit. I urge Canon to design and build other lenses for use with the PZ-E1.

Good value but zoom is not comparable with real rocker zoom

This price is right and it's an ok item. For professional use it will be more diifficult to make a smooth zoom. Zoom starts too slow or too fast. For professional use you need a zoom that's realy smooth at the start as it's all about the start of a zoom. Also the zoom buttons on the side under a lens is akward, but I guess one could get used to this. For the price, I would say try it and maybe it works for you. Only works with the USM lens from Cannon, not the STM lens.

  • Smooth Zoom for Video Production with Canon 80D

I bought about 8 Canon lenses to test with the Canon 80D for VIDEO production. I tried various lengths (15 mm, 70 mm, 300 mm), etc. I tried STM, USM, non STM, non USM, etc. I found out that lenses made several years ago (can't remember exact year) do not move as smoothly with Auto Focus. I believe this may be because DSLR cameras were not intended for motion filming (video production) at the time. Now that many are using the DSLR cameras for film making and music video production, Canon probably realized they needed to give an option for video film producers. They probably left is as an option so that the still photography people would not have to pay for an unnecessary gadget. So the Canon lenses I tried ranged from $70 - $350 used. The Auto Focus on most of them were jerky and noisy. Way too jerky for video production. This Power Zoom Adapter is for the zoom (of course - and not for the Auto Focus). But I mention the above background information to say that this Power Zoom combined with the required EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens are PERFECT for video production. The zoom motor on the PZ-E1 works extremely well when moving the respective lens. The mating between the two devices is robust and solid. The Auto Focus on the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens is smooth, quiet, and fast. Canon must have really engineering this pair to enable DSLRs to become like video cameras.

  • Good product

I haven't got the time to try it much but so far I am satisfy with it. It is good quality product. One thing I disappoint a little is the ebay price is 149. 00 I have to end up paying a little more for tax and shipping cost. Not good.

  • Great zoom for video

This zoom will be great for zoom in and out for video. I only wish there were more lenses other than the 18 -135mm EF lens were compatible. Price is not bad since branded DSLR accessories are typically very expensive.

  • Bring the ease of smooth zooms to your DSLR

Got this device a week ago, installed on my Canon 90D with the 18 - 135mm lens very easy. The zoom worked as advertised, very smooth, and quiet. I am happy with it.

  • Turns the Canon EOS 18-135 mm IS STM into a CINE lens

Makes video more cinematic by smoothing the zoom in and zoom out.

  • Good for casual, not worth it.
