The Hewlett-Packard 38g graphing calculator is a manual programmable machine introduced for use by high school students and teachers in the fields of math and science. It has 32 KB RAM of memory, displays in 8-line monochrome, and has an 8-bit character set. Powered up with three AAA batteries, it operates for days before needing to change the batteries. The sliding plastic cover provides protection from damage for the 38g calculator, making it suitable for younger students in advanced math or science classes. Students will be able to search for information and get results for calculations involving curve fitting, fractions, graph plots, equations, and variables. Students can plot numerous graphs including polar, parametric, cobweb, stairstep, histogram, scatter, box, and whisker graphs. The 38g graphing calculator has hardware based on the HP 48g series calculators, which are graphic calculators used for more advanced science and math applications. Features of this series include a split screen for graphs and equations, scrollable history to review previous work, a statistics function, and a matrix operation. Unlike the 48g series, the 38g series does not use reverse polish notation or RPN. The 38 series uses the infix notation, also known as the algebraic format, which means the mathematical sign is placed between the numbers rather than at the end of the numbers when students enter a manual equation. One advantage of this graphing calculator is the ability to design aplets. These interactive applications can be used as part of a math or science curriculum or to introduce a new lesson. The aplets let teachers transfer math or science graphs or equations from their calculator to the students’ 38g calculators. There are six types of aplets pre-programmed, which are function, parametric, polar, sequence, statistics, and solve. The instruction manual explains how to use each application and how to customize it. Teachers and students can customize these applications to suit their needs or create new interactive applications within the 38 series. The ability to transfer information from the teacher’s 38 series to the students’ allows all information to be programmed at the same time in an identical format. Students can then explore the application and make individual changes. Teachers can create word problems or graphing problems and send them directly to a student’s calculator. Teachers may also utilize PDF files or online communication tools with the 38 series. The 38g communicates with other math and science machines through the use of infrared transfer, where an infrared ray sends data between machines. The infrared ray also works to communicate with printers so that teachers can print directly from the calculator. Other ways these communicate is through a local area network or the Internet. Teachers can program work on the calculator, connect it to a computer, and post the lessons or information directly online for easy student access. An extra accessory cable that plugs into an overhead projector allows for the calculator face to project onto the overhead for full class lessons or explanations. This type of programmable calculator removes the need for manual input from students and helps teachers relay information quickly and efficiently.
