Two elements separate Biometal from the plethora of 16-bit side-scrolling shooters. First is the GAM weapon, which circles your ship like a satellite, acting as a shield and an unstoppable force. Unfortunately, this semi-cool weapon is basically a crutch, eliminating all too often the need for the usual skills required for shooters such as quick reaction time, a steady hand, and accurate shooting. Second is the ill-fitting (yet snappy) soundtrack, which features six technopop hits by the group 2 Unlimited, including the basketball pre-game staple "Get Ready for This." Otherwise, the game is purely pedestrian and is plagued by slowdown, repetitive backgrounds, weak explosions, short levels, and unexciting gameplay. Stick with R-Type III or Gradius III.
