    The author was aided by a photographic memory, detailed descriptions, wise insights and superior knowledge and use of the English language. This is a very moving account of McCarter's enlistment, first months in service and the battle of Fredericksburg, where he was wounded and later discharged. Even though this story covers only a few months, the wonderful details of being a private in the Irish Brigade are compelling. McCarter's views of southerners, especially slaves preserves a true telling of the realities of life during the war in northern Virginia. My gr-great grandfather was in the same regiment as the author, the 116th PA Volunteers, recruited at the same time in Philadelphia, so this book has a great personal connection and appreciation for me.
