When I had run a 200 amp panel to the new garage, they jumpered/shunted the meter box at the house and put one meter on the pole that feeds the house and the shop. I am going to remove the shunts and install the meter, then I can see how much of my electric bill is from the house and subtract that from the total to calculate how much the garage uses. I'm certain the meter will work, they don't go bad very often.
