I remember wanting to see this movie years ago when it first came out. I was finally able to catch this movie on tv and I was hooked from the beginning. I love Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher as actors. The dynamics of these two characters in this movie is phenomenal :) This is the only movie that I have seen that shows a side of the Coast Guard that I had never known about. There are so many movies about the other branches of service, it was really nice watching this movie about a branch that doesn't always get recognition. I am so thankful to the individuals that serve our country and I'm sure this part of the Coast Guard is nothing like the movie portrays, but this movie is truly worth watching. This movie kept me on the edge of my seat, with a lot of smiles, chuckles, and even tears ... I remember wanting to see this movie years ago when it first came out. Kevin Costner Can Act?
I give this movie a five of five because a) it is a refreshing change from other boot camp movies, and b) because it completely took me by surprise. I mean, who knew Kevin Costner could act?! Don't get me wrong, I love that he produces sweeping epics like Dances with Wolves and The Postman, but I always walk out of the theater wishing they had cast someone else in the lead role. This movie was different. He fits the role, and is quite believable in what would have been a difficult character to portray. Ashton Kutcher is also surprisingly good. Not genius, but definitely competent. As I am not the first to review the film, I won't repeat the plot synopses others have already provided. I will however, note that my main beef with 21st century filmmaking is that they take an ... I will however, note that my main beef with 21st century filmmaking is that they take an Aristotelian approach to drama - the characters are unimportant, it's only the clever plot that matters. This theory results in two-dimensional, often stereotypical, characters who have no past or future to speak of, unless it is necessary for the plot. I am of the opposite view. Life is "character-driven," if you will, and I enjoy stories that acknowledge this fact. It is the interaction between people, whose respective characters are guided by their pasts, that drives events. And you see that in this film. I cannot go into detail without spoilers, but trust me when I tell you that most of the characters in this film are not cardboard cutouts (though you can't avoid a couple of them in brief supporting roles, I guess), but careful costructions of what seem like actual people, with realistic, and often conflicting, desires. But enough about theory. The movie itself is highly entertaining; the ending, though a bit corny, is not wrapped up happily with a little bow; the acting is much better than I had ever hoped from a Costner/Kutcher film; and the whole package comes together to form a pleasant surprise. I highly recommend renting it. And, if you get a good price, you might want to pick up a copy (I'm not so sanguine on this score, as I don't suggest buying movies sight-unseen, and, frankly, everyone's taste is different).

This is a really great movie, and I would say buy it instead of renting it. Kevin Costner, and Ashton Kutcher are really great in this movie together. I never thought that Ashton Kutcher could probably ever do anything other kind of acting than comedy like in the 70's Show but he has proved me wrong in this movie he is also great in a action movie and seeing him as man, and not just a silly kid was something else. Kevin Costner is also great in this movie. It's about Jake Fischer (Kutcher) a swimming champ becoming a Coast Guard, and being trained by Ben Randall (Costner) who is a legendary rescue swimmer. Randall (Costner) is kind of hard on him at first to see is he has what it takes to be a Rescue Swimmer, and Fischer (Kutcher) has a cocky attitude who is trying hard to beat Randalls ... This is a really great movie, and I would say buy it instead of renting it. Kevin Costner, and Ashton Kutcher are really great in this movie together. The only problem I had with it was I kept having flashbacks of other movies The Guardian is the exact same as. I don't really like Ashton Kutcher's performance in this film but everybody else is decent enough. The Guardian isn't anything special but it's definitely worth a watch if you're a Costner or Kutcher fan. Final Verdict: 3/5 Rent or Buy?: In my opinion... rent this one first. It's a 150% (nearly-scene-for-scene) blatant rip-off of "An Officer And A Gentleman". That's OK....as long as that's what it is meant to be -- a remake !!!! Final Word: "The Guardian is 4-star remake of "An Officer And A Gentleman" but with better special effects." "An Officer And A Gentleman" remains the better 5-Star film., deeper rooted in self-emotion and proving self-worth; tugging "much-harder" on the heart-strings. Either way....
