Great for some, but not for everyone...
I really liked the movie, but my wife found it slow and boring. It has a laid-back pace, with subtle humor (definitely not the currently popular in-your-face or vulgar humor, nor was it slap-stick). Think of it more like Andy of Mayberry humor, or a very toned down Hee Haw. I'm not a listener of the PBS A Prairie Home Companion, but I believe this is pretty much a video version of that style humor, especially since Garrison Keillor is the star. Almost the entire movie was set inside a theater building, onstage and backstage. There really was not much of a plot, nor much action, but as I said, I did like it as a feel-good movie. I liked the music in the movie, too, again in country Hee Haw style.I really liked the movie, but my wife found it slow and boring. One of the cruelest things you can say about someone is that he or she has a face that is perfect for radio. Even though Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion was never intended to be looked at, Robert Altman has given us something that is good both on the screen and in our ears. This film is an approximation of Garrison Keillor's Public Radio show, A Prairie Home Companion and regular listeners will recognize the voices (and see the faces) of several PHC contributors. In order to make it interesting, they have added a handful of other performers, some of whom take the place of Mr. Keillor himself. They also add a little conflict, in the menacing form of Tommy Lee Jones, who represents Corporate Interests. And some blurring of real life and radio fantasy makes this is more than ... Reilly as the singing cowboys. This is not an action movie. Its natural audience consists of Altman and Keillor fans. If you have never heard of either of them, this may not be the best place to start. There is more entertainment in Gosford Park, or at least fewer inside jokes. And chances are, you can listen to PHC on your radio this Saturday night. After you have, though, chances are you'll enjoy this quiet little film.

If you like the National Public Radio show, a Prairie Home Companion, then you should really enjoy this movie. Some characters are brought to life (please excuse the misspellings, but I am writing this in a hurry during a work break ;-) through Woody Harrison, Meryl Streep, Lilly Tomlyn, Kevin Kline and others. It includes some of the standard "Guy Noir" stuff, and the "Lefy and Dusty" humor. Even "bad jokes" are included. The extras on the DVD include extended songs and acts. Garrison Keeler plays himself, including his self-depricating humor. Some people who are not familiar with a Praire Home Companion radio show might not understand it, or even like it. This is a movie about life and death, of people and of a way of life. Its about the high's and low's of a small group of radio entertainers who have come to the end of the line with radio. The movie shows how the ending of an era effects the players of this radio show. Where will they go, what will they do now that this part of their lives are over. Its a fun but sad movie. It makes you think about what will happen when the way of life as you always knew moves on to something else. Besides Robert Altwood directed. You know you have to watch it just to catch the funny little quirks that he puts in.This is a movie about life and death, of people and of a way of life. A Prarie Home Companion DVD
I bought it because it was inexpensive and a movie I had not watched. It was hilariously funny for an adult audience!! The story line moved fast the whole movie, it was never slow. There were a couple of scenes where adult content jokes were made. For example one scene shows a lady ,approximately sixty-ish, running into a room and she says "I am ready for you to put your sausage in my bun" and she finds out that the man whom she is talking to has passed away in his sleep. Another part is that there's a pregnant woman who works for "the show" and a couple of fellow show personnel console her on her being a single mother. On a possitive note, the movie does not contain very much cussing, nudity, or adult situations, if any! Over all, it is a very funny comedy that has the gamet from light ...
