This is my first set of clipless pedals. I bought this style so that I could hop on my bike any time, with ordinary street shoes, and ride. It came with several pins and shims, but I had a high-end bike shop assist me with fitting them to my bike and Sidi shoes. They were fine out of the box, and in fact, the pins may dig into my carbon shoe soles, damaging them and creating unnecessary wear and tear. But if your shoes have the right sole material, I could see real value in using the pins. For the effort to install the pins for a day's riding, I'd rather reinstall my flat pedals, though. I'm an older rider, with foot problems, so these give me a suitable foundation for harder riding without damaging my feet. The SPD mechanism is well-executed, and the materials have proven durable after about 750 miles of riding. They are plated, so rust isn't an issue.I use a dry-film lubricant on the moving parts, "Otis Special Forces Dry Lube" which is marketed as a firearms lube, but works great as a bike lubricant that won't attract dust and grit. The pedals are durable, and are available in several colors. I am very satisfied, and will stick with them long term.Read full review
