The zoom H4n handy recorder is a great entry-level recording device that is made versatile by its small form factor and user friendly interface. I’ve used the zoom for a number of years, sound designing for small time theater productions and the sort, and by far my preferred method of recording is using this product. The recorder comes with two 1/4” tip-sleeve/XLR combo I put jacks, one for left, one for right. The combo jacks let you record using microphone XLR cables, or line inputs for an amp or other device. The input jacks come with the option of phantom power (+48V/+24V). The built in stereo microphone is not too shabby of an option for on the go recording, and you are able to record four tracks simultaneously. I’m a huge fan of this device and look forward to using it more in the future!Read full review

The SD Card reader has issues. Does not read the sd card no matter how many times your format it and reconfigure. After researching the issue this appears to be a common deficiency with this brand and product. Will never purchase brand again.

The recorder arrived so much more quickly than anticipated, was clean and in perfect condition (looked brand new), and every detail was just as described. I've used an H4n for all of my personal productions and projects and I'm so excited to finally have my own! I've used it on a few shoots already with a Rode shotgun mic and the sound has been exactly what I needed. Would recommend to anyone who does film/recording/sound work. Can't beat the price.

After a month of use I am pleasantly surprised at the quality of this unit for the price. We are hard on equipment and I initially thought that the plastic body of this unit would be a detriment, but it is quite resilient and makes the entire unit much lighter, great for extended handheld use. The audio quality is reliably decent through the attached microphones and excellent when used to power our external Mics. The VU meters and clip indicators are clear and helpful and the unit comes with more features than we'll ever use. On the negative side the menus are plentiful and can be a hassle when you need to change settings fast. My Marantz unit has profiles that you can configure and easily switch between, I miss that on this unit. Changing the input gain requires pushing a button that clicks and can be heard in your recording, this is unacceptable in situations where changing on the fly is necessary. I have also had several occasions where I thought I was recording but needed to push the record button again - the indicators are not professional level in this regard, it should be immediately obvious if you are recording or not.Read full review
I purchased this product as my previous digital voice recorder was getting old and it was time to upgrade. I purchased this product due to all the excellent reviews I have read about this product from this site as well as other reviews located on the internet. I don't use it for producing, making music, listening to music, taping lectures, etc. I use it to listen to EVPs (electronic voice phenomena). I said listen instead of catching as they do occur and this device plays them back so clearly. Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, that is your choice. I do. I have no explanation for them and I am not here to debate. I am here to tell people that this is a amazing device. The handbook is quite large, but is simple to read. For those people who want to listen to amazingly clear EVP's should have this device. A regular DVC is going to cost $50-80 dollars. Spend a few dollars more and it will make spirit communication all the more exciting.Read full review
