Without doubt the finest selection of Schwarzkopf's art - at a great price!
Throughout her recording career, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was contracted (exclusively) to EMI. From the 78s and LPs nearly as far as the CD era, she recorded hundreds of titles for the label. Her repertoire included folksongs, concert arias, lieder, oratorios and requiems, champagne operettas as well as principal roles in Mozart & R. Strauss operas. She was a recital specialist - especially in the songs of Schubert and Wolf. Particularly noteworthy is the live recital from the Salzburg Festival - an all Wolf recital with Wilhelm Furtwangler at the piano! This 10 CD set can, ultimately, only act as a sampler for her enormous talents. EMI have produced a CD boxed set which samples her considerable repertoire at a knock-down budget price. As an unashamed Schwarzkopf fan, I have the full opera sets etc. but I still turn to this set as a reminder of the various facets of her art. She was to the German opera repertoire what Callas was to the Italian repertoire. Schwarzkopf's performances in Mozart's Da Ponte operas are among the greatest ever recorded, likewise the Capriccio and Der Rosenkavalier operas of Richard Strauss. Of course, you are not going to get the complete operas in this wide ranging survey - but the extracts are delightful! EMI have, appropriately, issued this set as part of the 'Diva' series - and who could argue with that.
