LOVE THIS DVD SERIES--AND I'M A ROCK MUSIC FAN!
As a rock music fan, I wasn't sure I'd like this because as a teen, my father always had The Porter Waggoner Show, Johnny Cash Show or Panther Hall on TV and I heard more of this music than I wanted to at the time. I preferred the British Invasion, et al. I happened to catch the last show in this series on TV, and it was so good, I knew I had to see it all. VERY informative--I had no idea Mother Maybelle Carter was so influential to country music! I realized I knew tons of these songs, and it was amazing to see how the artists developed their music and became stars. Now, I'm buying this wonderful music to listen to today--my father would be amazed! This is a magnificent production detailing the major players and their evolution in the development, history and progress of country music. The sound is delicious, the immortal artists discussed are the best, and Peter Coyotes' dialog is extremely stirring as is the glowing story. The video is superb with a record of rare and gorgeous performances collected over the decades the artists were originally discovered, some as children, up to and including their major hits, career achievements, and in many cases sad deaths. The associated audio album "Country Music" also sold on Amazon contains additional and full versions of the outstanding hits recorded over the years by the artists memorialized on this video collection. If you don't know what country music is really all about, this album ... This is a magnificent production detailing the major players and their evolution in the development, history and progress of country music. Just one more solid gold Ken Burns treasure.
We have several of Ken Burns' amazing productions - Civil War; Baseball; Lewis & Clark and others. All are wonderful. But so far, Country Music is the most downright knee-slapping fun that we have ever seen. At 82, my wife and I have grown up with so many of these country artists and to see and hear them again plus learn about their family histories (like the Carter Family) is absolutely riveting. We both got tears in our eyes during these programs. EVERYTHING Ken Burns produces is solid gold and we are proud to have so many of his titles in our library. Can't wait to see the next one.
