I have to admit, the first time I read this book was in college. It was an assigned book for an intro English lit class. When I picked it up at the book store, I took one look at it, and I wanted to chuck it as far away from me as possible. What could I possibly like in a book written in the 50's? That is what I thought. Boy was I wrong. This is now one of my all time favorite books. It weaves together the Biblical story of Cain and Abel, and the history of California's Salinas Valley. Biblical references aside, this is an all around great story. Even if you are not Christian, the book is still a worthwhile buy. The plots in this book are enough to hold any readers interest, Christian or not. It is a tale of a family. An American family, with problems just like everyone else. Now, if you ...

  • A Great Book! Read It, Buy It, Borrow It!

I decided to buy this book by John Steinbeck as part of your 'bucket list'. I have just finished Cannery Row and Grapes of Wrath. Working my way through all of his major works. Being born in California, and lived in the Monterey area (Salinas) there is a special connection. His writing is Awesome! His descriptions take you there, the character development is so realistic....it may be fiction....but may be not. Penquin Classics are very fine publishers, the book is so easily readable.

An excellent book, indeed a clasic. Beautifully written, wonderful descriptions, some philosophical diversions. The story follows two families from the late 1800's into the next century. It is somewhat biographical.
