the timber might be wax dipped and resistant to rot, but the quality of the timber is the poorest I have seen in 20 years as a beekeeper and will fall apart anyhow so I can't see the point in trying to preserve it.

We have not had negative feedback like this on our wax-dipped boxes because they are of very good quality and are very resilient. I have boxes which are over six years old without painting and still going strong.Perhaps actually try the product before criticising it.I am guessing you are having a really bad day.
