About this product

Product Information

Read the remarkable true story of a young boy's journey from civil war in east Africa to a refugee camp in Sudan, to a childhood on welfare in an affluent American suburb, and eventually to a full-tuition scholarship at Harvard University. Following his father's advice to treat all people-even the most unsightly beetles-as though they were angels sent from heaven, Mawi overcomes the challenges of language barriers, cultural differences, racial prejudice, and financial disadvantage to build a fulfilling, successful life for himself in his new home. Of Beetles and Angels is at once a harrowing survival story and a compelling examination of the refugee experience. With hundreds of thousands of copies sold since its initial publication, and as a frequent selection as one book/one school/one community reads, this unforgettable memoir continues to touch and inspire readers. This special expanded fifteenth anniversary edition includes a new introduction and afterword from the author, a discussion guide, and more.

  • Of Beetles & Angels by Dave Berger, Mawi Asgedom

This is an amazing story of a mother's love for her children and her perseverance to give her children opportunities she never had. To hear the stories of Mawi being a refugee with little food, running to safety and becoming a Harvard Graduate and being successful beyond what anyone would have dreamed. A story of hard work by a young man who was given much love and opportunities from teachers, friends and complete strangers. I heard Mawi speak at a high school I work at (Glenbard East) and I was so awed by the blessings that God gave him and the love God had for he and his family. A book not to be missed! Enjoy!!!

  • Of Angels and Beetles

This is an awesome/inspiring book. It should be required reading for everyone, esp. 6th grade and up. To live in Africa with very little, having their fathers' life threatened by his own country, to moving to America after a 100 mile trek to meet up with their father, it all paid off. The family was taught that God puts the lowest of the low[beetles]to test us. They found many beetles who turned out to be angels in their lives. This young man shows that persverence, heart, and determination are what made him what he is today. YOU [and your children] HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK.
