Case is extremely solid. The inner foam is firm enough for heavy objects, and the base foam has cuts to allow easy creation of compartments. The top foam piece doesn't have cuts, which is a bit inconvenient if you want to use the case for two layers, but it's not a big issue. I'd guess the secondary clips on the side are only needed if you plan to submerge the case under water, as the front two do a great job of sealing and holding it shut. I suppose they are to ensure a watertight seal if the box is well packed out. This is not some flimsy plastic case, but a tough unit you could probably jump up and down on, hence its not-insignificant weight.
