About this product

Product Information

A classic Western regarded by many as the best of the genre, John Ford's THE SEARCHERS has been acknowledged by several directors who came into their own in the 1970s, including Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Paul Schrader, and George Lucas, as a powerful influence on their work. The film stars John Wayne as Ethan Edwards, a case-hardened Civil War veteran returning to his brother Aaron's (Walter Coy) Texas home in 1868. When Rev. Samuel Johnson Clayton (Ward Bond) arrives to raise a posse to run down the Comanche who have stolen the cattle of neighbor Lars Jorgenson (John Qualen), Ethan is among those who join him. They return to find the Edwards family slaughtered and the two girls, Lucy (Pippa Scott) and Debbie (Natalie Wood), missing. The posse continues to search for the girls but turns back as winter settles in. However, Ethan and his reluctantly accepted companion, Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), the girls' part-Cherokee stepbrother, press on for another seven years, with the Indian-hating veteran becoming ever more fanatical as the hard seasons pass. In his epic meditation on racism, obsession, paranoia, and the myth of the West, Ford explores the ugly underside of a genre that he had imbued with optimism in his early career. Wayne gives perhaps his most powerful performance as the embittered Edwards, but it's the visual poetry of what are possibly Ford's most carefully framed, lit, and composed images that shape this masterwork from beginning to end. As Wayne walks through the doorway at the film's end, he grabs his elbow in a tribute to his and Ford's close friend Harry Carey Sr., a Western film icon who had passed away a few years before.

    great film

I got this a birthday present for a friend, and he was happy to get it, In my opinion it is one of the best films ever made, the cast is fantastic, Ford's directing is genius and this movie proves that John Wayne can act.

  • Top critical review

Showing its age but worth a look.

It is showing its age but the Duke makes it worth watching. Nice cinematography and color. Story line and character development is good but when compared to some of the Dukes later movies it comes up lacking. True Grit and the Shootist come to mind but I for the most part enjoyed watching it. For what I paid to it would buy again and recommend for Western lovers.

  • The Searchers (DVD, 1997)

What's not to love about this film? The best western from director John Ford in my opinion! Its got it all. The obssessed Searcher John Wayne as Ethan Edwards makes you truly believe in his hatred of all things Comanche as he looks for his captured niece if only to kill her once she's found as she's now "tainted" by life with her captors. Jeffery Hunter shines as Wayne's loyal companion Martin Pauley, an adopted orphan now orphaned again by the slaughter of his foster family. He intends to rescue his sister Debbie even if it means killing Ethan (Wayne) to save her. The landscape wins its own Oscar as Monument Valley is so seminal a spot in the American mind's eye, it provides an awesome character of its own in the movie. And watch for where Wayne's son Patrick gets a lesson in ...

  • The Searchers

I absolutly loved it. It was exactly as promised. The color was fantastic, one of John's greatest films. The color was excellent and the scenes were breathtaking. On a large HD screen it was like being there, just like the old days of cinerama. The scene with John and Scar were excelent. To bad they don't make movies like this anymore. It was the true essence of the Western not like today with all the violence that people need today for a movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

  • Great character interaction with wonderful real scenery.

One of the best John Wayne movies ever. He actually plays a character rather than himself. This guy really shows what a great actor he was.
