Audiobook Contact by Carl Sagan
It is difficult for me to believe that no one, before me, has written a review about this book. This is a science fiction classic and an absolutely wonderful plot with very interesting characters. The great thing about the audiobook is that it is narrated by Jodie Foster; she played a leading role in the movie based on the book. She has such a wonderful presence and reading voice for the book. The audiobook is an abridged version of the book and I prefer unabridged versions, but I could not tell what was left out because the audiobook is a superb production. The author, Carl Sagan, was a modern astronomer and educator, who popularized space science and is mostly known to the public for his PBS series, the Cosmos. He was the David Duncan Professor of Astonomy and Sciences and director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies at Cornell University. He contributed much to our understanding of other planets in our solar system and had an interest in searching for life in the cosmos. He helped design the golden record plaque that was placed on NASA's Voyager space probe so that, if by chance, it was found by other intelligent beings, they could understand something about the life on Earth. In reading his nonfiction book, The Cosmic Connection, I was amused to find out that his interest in studying astronomy came from reading Edgar Rice Burroughs science books about Mars and the "hurtling moons of Barsoom." This enthusiasm comes through in his writing. So, if you wish to read a fiction book, that was written by someone who is expert in knowing the science facts, this is the book to choose.
