Remember The Songs That Won World War 2 - Vera Lynn
Vera Lynn was born Vera Margaret Welch on 20 March 1917 in East Ham, London. Later she adopted her grandmother's maiden name Lynn as her stage name. She began singing at the age of seven in a working men's club. Her first radio broadcast, with the Joe Loss Orchestra, was in 1935. At this point she was being featured on records released by dance bands including Loss's and Charlie Kunz's. In 1936 she made her first solo record, on the Crown label, "Up the Wooden Hill to Bedfordshire". This label was soon swallowed up by Decca. After a short stint with Loss she stayed with Kunz for a few years during which she recorded several standards. She later moved to the aristocrat of British dance bands, Bert Ambrose. On a personnal note: I found her voice smooth and touching. She has a middle C quality that over the years I am attracted to. I am divided on the lyrics of her songs. Half I find unappealing the other half are touching and romantic. Hey, maybe she did not pick her own songs? Well worth be added to anyone's musical library!

This is a must-have for those who value the amazing variety of WWII music, from both sides of the Atlantic. As Americans, we've become very familiar with Glen Miller, the Dorseys, and our many other great talents. But England? Often the music's--and no surprise here--more subtle. Their inspirational wartime songs didn't get anything like our 'air time', of course. But their songs are so poignant. All the more so, because they fought so valiantly alone in the early years. When Vera sings of 'silver wings', just try not to picture the Battle of Britain. 'The White Cliffs of Dover' and 'A Nightengale.." are immediate in mood and musically superb. Her voice was THE voice of her time, and for these songs. She doesn't overplay it, or apologetically pull any punches either. She didn't ... She could sing on a street corner and bring traffic to a halt, I suspect. We actually bought this CD twice. Once we 'loaned' it to a WWII Vet who was in nursing care. It would have been the last music he listened to, which gives us a sense of gratitude. After this wonderful man passed away, our CD was not returned to us. We had to order it again for this reason, but we're so glad we did. The moment it arrived, it became a part of our lives again. So thank you Vera, thank you Mr. Churchill, thank you Pilots, thank you Home Guard, and thank heavens we're still speaking English.
