Retold by griots, the guardians of African Culture, this oral tradition has been handed down from the thirteenth century and captures all the mystery and majesty of medieval African kingship. It is the epic tale, based on an actual figure, of Sundiata (Sunjata). Part history and part legend, it tells how Sundiata fulfilled the prophesies that he would unite the twelve kingdoms of Mali into a powerful empire. This Revised Edition includes background information which provides a geographical, religious, social, and political context for the story. A ' who' s who of characters' and ' a glossary of places' will enhance the reader' s experience.

Dvd arrived quickly and well packaged and taken care of. The item was listed as acceptable and met all of my needs but here's a quick description of what I got: Some wear is visible on the plastic sleeve on the outside of the case. The inside leaflet was still there! The disk has about 3 very notable scratches, although none are bigger than about 2 centimeters. Little to no grime anywhere on the product. Great service!

  • Names hard to grasp but the story isn't.

Hands down, this Epic of Old Mali is thrilling. I loved it! I did have difficulties with the names and I got confused the first read through with the people with multiple names. Overall, I just inserted my own names and that made it even better. It is a fast-paced book which keeps the reader's attention until the end. I didn't like the fact that the griots, ancient historians who usually dictate, made themselves seem beyond perfect. Other than that, I recommend this to anyone. By the way, I totally agree that Disney ripped this story off.
