  • Civil War Virginia is a good 30,000 foot view of the Civil War in Virginia.

I am about 2/3 of the way through Civil War Virginia. It is an easy read as it provides a very high level view of the "who" and "where" of happenings in Virginia. Whole tomes have been written about many of the battles mentioned, so details are not a big part of this small book. However, with previous knowledge or a desire to learn more about the battles and personalities involved, this is a nice starter book.

  • James Robertson writes an excellent book

Dr. Robertson, professor of history at Virginia Tech, is a great scholar on the Civil War. I have seen his TV shows many times. This book is very interesting, about Virginia in the Civil War. I live in Virginia. It is amazing how badly the state suffered during the war, soldiers and civilians. Starvation was a big problem after Gen. Sheridan from the North burned the farms and crops in the Shenandoah Valley, so Lee's troops could not be supplied. Also, it is amazing to know that half of Lee's troops were barefoor when they fought the Battle of Gettysburg. Starving, barefoot, no woner they lost the battle. This book makes the Civil War come alive, and if we ever feel sorry for ourselves again, we should think of those people and how they suffered.

  • One of the best Civil War books

This is a well researched and well written book, as are all the books by James I. Robertson, Jr.. This author does Not put one to sleep with boring facts-he makes the facts interesting-which is the mark of a great teacher. If you wish to know about Virginia and it's citizens during the War--read any book by this author- you will come away from the experience enlightened.
