    The Bishop Murder case is the fourth novel by S. S. Van Dine (pseudnym of Willard Huntington Wright)featuring his amateur detective Philo Vance. Philo Vance was constructed in the mode of British fictional detectives of the period such as Sayer's Lord Peter Wimsey who had made his appearance in 1926 in Whose Body?. Vance was a wealthy dilettante and aesthetic who was portrayed as a dandy and bon vivant. The books were narrated by Van Dine who took the position of the Watson figure. His admiration for Vance was based on the fact that Vance excelled at any lofty, upper class thing he attempted. In short, Vance is a bit of an insufferable bore with a heavy smoking habit.     One cannot write a review of any of Willard Huntington Wright's (AKA S. S. Van Dine) novels without giving away the intricate plot. The storyline is intricate and well thought out. The characters are well developed. Wright's grammar is perfect but it is not stilted in any way. Be prepared with a dictionary and some paper to write definitions on as you will indeed to increase your vocabulary if you so desire. Philo Vance is the American Lord Peter Whimsy, but where Lord Peter is exuberant and lively, Vance is reserved and laconic. Both are extremely witty and well read. Vance makes numerous references to Shakespeare, poetry, art, and history to make his points. He speaks French, German, Spanish, and Latin. You will be amazed at the plot. He has written twelve novels and each is extremely ...
