Inspiring true story!
This movie really hits home when you consider it is a true story about one teacher's inpiring effort to make Hispanic kids believe in themselves and push to discover their long dormant abilities. Set in a chaotic, undisciplined, uninspired school, Edward James Olmos is convincing as a demanding, loving, creative teacher who refuses to accept a history of failure and underachievement and through sheer will-power and love pushes the kids way beyond any level they ever dreamed of achieving. Although it comes off as a little corny, the facts speak for themselves. Stand and Deliver-DVD
The DVD version of Stand and Deliver was a good investment. This was an absolutely great movie to show to my freshman class of algebra students who occasionally complain about how much work they have to do and how "hard" life is for them. It proved to be an enriching experience for my students to see young men and women close to their own age encounter more hardships and yet excel in a subject that they themselves were convinced they could not conquer. This movie was both motivational and thought provoking. I am glad that I was able to purchase it to help my students gain insight into the lives of other students who, although were less fortunate from an economic and social perspective, were nonetheless able to smash the stereotypic low expectations with which they were wrongly ... The DVD version of Stand and Deliver was a good investment. It was used by several math teachers to inspire and motivate math students, who live in the inner city, to have a desire to achieve in the face of adversity. Because it is a condensed version of a true life experience, of a dedicated teacher, in an inner city school,it reinforces for all who view it that anyone can have success when given the opportunity to teach and learn. It is an excellent motivational vehicle.This DVD was purchased to show to 8th graders.
