The Canon Speedlite 540EZ Shoe Mount Flash for Canon clips on and provides a large light output of a maximum of GNo=54 (at ISO 100-m TELE mm). This flash is a real performer and makes for great high-level flash photography. Its five-point metering and three-point through the lens (TTL) metering when mounted on the EOS-1N/EOS-1N RS makes for fantastic flash photography. The Canon Speedlite 540EX Shoe Mount Flash uses the camera’s multizone flash metering system and automatically weighs flash exposure at the active focusing point, resulting in amazing exposure accuracy with off-center subjects. This lets the photographer free to concentrate on subjects and composition instead of worrying about adjustments to lighting. The Speedlite 540EX is also brilliant at capturing people and other moving subjects, again helping the photographer focus on the moment and not the settings. Shooters and subjects alike will appreciate the warmer color balance than what was available in previous EOS Speedlite models. Skin tones are more lifelike and pleasing, which is a big plus for such a small flash unit. There’s real power in the Canon Speedlite 540EZ too, making it the flash of choice for almost any shooting situation. The 540EZ has a maximum guide number of 54/177 (ISO 100, m/ft.). More power means faster recycling in those short-to-intermediate-range situations and it also puts it out there in extended ranges for long-distance flash situations as well as fill-in flash settings. This little flash can puts its power to use to increase depth of field for close-up work, too, by using smaller apertures. The Speedlite 540EZ Shoe Mount Flash for Canon allows for TTL automatic flash photography in alternate modes, such as shutter priority AE, aperture priority AE, and manual mode. These modes give the photographer control of aperture, shutter speed separately or together, with the flash exposure automatically controlled. The main features of the Canon Speedlite 540EZ Flash include its compatibility with the full EOS system. Users will realize better flash exposure control and reliability which results in a warmer color balance for great skin tones. The Canon Speedlite 540EZ also has a higher flash output (Maximum Guide Number: 54/177, ISO 100 m/ft.) with three-zone flash meters that work with EOS cameras that have multipoint AF systems. The Speedlite 540 also provides exposure confirmation via the integrated A-TTL and TTL automatic control modes for flash. The manual flash control provides eight output options from full power to 1/128. This component also provides stroboscopic flash operation that creates up to 100Hz (flashes per second), and its improved tilting capabilities go from -7 for close-ups to 90. A built-in AF auxiliary lamp is compatible with five-point AF when used with EOS-1N and EOS-1. Focal lengths are improved too with lengths from 24mm to 105mm with greater auto-zoom coverage. The built-in wide panel allows for focal lengths as wide as 18mm. The Canon Speedlite 540EZ also includes a Save Energy (SE) function for superior operability.

How to know its a DUD
I've purchased 6 of these so far at various prices and theres a reason the ULTRA MINT CONDITION 540ez goes for much more than the +$60 ones. Mainly these flashes are very old, built well and can endure quite a beating as many of the 540ez flashes I got have more scuffs than my 580ex I use for weddings. They're very durable in that sense. However a flash that has been used over time will reduce its ability to recharge after flashing. My mint condition 540ez will recharge to full flash in about 2 seconds while my 540ez with signs of abuse will recharge in about 6-8 seconds (unacceptable to me unless you're trying to annoy your model). One of the Best Flashes Available
After 15 years of using the first digital canara made by Olympus I decided to get something more my style. I couldn't afford a new flash for the Canon T1i . I researched and purchased the Canon Speedlite 540 Regular Flash. INCREDABLE product !!! It takes a bit getting used to (still learning) but after Many combinations that the flash offers for use I finally Dialed into what is exactly what i wanted . Although it was used I received an extreem amout of support from the seller , he helped me choose the right settings and was fair about the price for the flash. The flash has too many options to list and very easy to learn with little practice and patience you will be amazed as to what a flash of this caliber can do for you. INCREDABLE !!! 540EZ great for strobist work
The Canon Speedlight 540EZ was the top of the line flash for Canon film cameras. Since Canon's digital EOS cameras use E-TTL instead of TTL metering, this flash will not automatically adjust it's power output for proper exposure... for that the EX line of flashes is required. This flash has 2 other modes though, Manual and Multi/Stroboscopic. For any type of "off camera" flash setup however (strobist.com), these flashes work just fine for that... and can be had for about $70+. These flashes make a great addition to any strobist gear list. Note: The flash will make a noise as it recharges it's capacitors, however be sure to inquire if it makes any noise while it is fully charged and on standby. I have one which continues to make noises (which can be annoying) while the other is ... The Canon Speedlight 540EZ was the top of the line flash for Canon film cameras.
