Still a very powerful financial calculator
This is another addition to my growing collection of HP financial calculators. Functionally it is very similar to the HP 19BII, however if you have used that calculator before you will miss the extra screen space that calculator had. Here you can see one level of your stack i.e. only "x" that is on screen. Although this may not be a problem to people who are use to e.g. HP 12C, once you get use to having that information visible it is a shame to lose it again. The soft menu keys along the top of the calculator don't quite exactly match up to the menus labels on screen, which again was not a problem in previous designs. This is because the keys are set wider than the screen. There was plenty of space available between keys, so why they were not placed closer together is a bit of a wonder. ... Once you get use to this it isn't really a problem. The whole keyboard feels a little spread out; and sparse. There are very few shifted functions, instead most functions are done through the menu systems. Key response is good, despite it's age I haven't had any missed keystrokes. There is a little tactile feedback. The screen is OK considering the age. Viewing angles are not good, but contrast adjustment is simple and doesn't require you to enter a menu, just hold the CLR key and press + or -, this is only a problem if you're going from having the calculator in your hand to the desk or vice versa, or you move it around your desk. My calculator does not quite sit flat, which gives it an annoying wobble when using one handed on the table. The rubber feet however appear to be in good condition. Perhaps it is only a fault with my particular one. At first I was confused as to why they would have the parenthesis keys as a primary function and x<>y and roll down shifted, but was pleased to see that in RPN mode the swap and roll down function are in fact the primary functions. You can also use the up and down arrow keys to roll through the stack. The menu system makes all the usual business and financial calculations easy, and the most simple of those are intuitive, simply by following along the menu keys. If you haven't used a HP financial calculator before, or have only used a 12C, then learning how the Cash Flow's and Sum menus work will take a little time, but once you have read the manual it will be clear. All internal calculations happen quite quickly. The math menu offers only 6 items, and I feel that these could have been included as shifted functions on the normal keys. The solver is incredibly powerful, if you take the time to learn how to use it. All round it's quite a nice, reasonably simple RPN financial calculator. It's well built and has a good range of easy to use financial and business functions, with a fantastic solver for more complex problems.
