Based on true events and a factual book by Richard Tregaskis, this movie shows the South Pacific war in a strikingly realistic manner. Following the U.S. Marines as they set about taking the island of Guadalcanal and it key airfield, the movie shows the incredible obstacles the leathernecks must overcome, including terrible weather, rough terrain, tropical disease and a constantly reinforced Japanese army. Scenes that show fighting in the jungle at often very short ranges are realistic and tell the story of the savage type of fighting that went on during the battle. Director Lewis Seiler does a great job with this one-and was a key director from 1930 to mid-1950 with smash hits in the Charlie Chan series (Charlie Chan in Paris for example) and also another big box office hit in The Winning team in the 1950s. He casts Anthony Quinn in this movie as a Mexican- American soldier in this movie-a key to Quinns later roles and places William Bendix in the position of a tough-talking combatant from Brooklyn in one of the other key roles here. This movie will certainly appeal to War movie collectors and lovers and also is a nice fit with collectors of Classic movies overall-it will entertain people who like this type of movies for a full night - without question.Read full review
I really enjoyed this video. It is accurate but entertaining. I am especially fascinated with the WWII era and enjoy finding accurate depictments of that era. This movie gives a clear view of what life as a soldier would have been like in the first weeks on Guadalcalnal. It does so without including sex or vile language which have become the backbone of most of todays movies. I appreciated the fact that I could watch it and not have to shut it off due to inappropriate content.
Guadalcanal was a key early victory in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
