Die großen gesellschaftlichen Umwälzungen infolge der Industrialisierung und die schrecklichen Erfahrungen des 1. Weltkrieges hatten auch die Stellung des Christentums im allgemeinen Denken nachhaltig erschüttert und eine große Unsicherheit hervorgerufen. Auf diese Entwicklung ging neben Oswald Spengler im "Untergang des Abendlandes" auch der bekannte lutherische Theologe Werner Elert (1885-1954), einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter des Neuluthertums, ein. In seinem 1921 erschienenen Werk trat dieser für eine deutliche Distanzierung des Christentums von der allgemeinen Kultur zugunsten einer qualitativen Selbständigkeit der Heilsgeschichte und der Unabhängigkeit der theologischen Historik ein. Neben dem hohen theologischen Wert seines Werks ist der Kampf um das Christentum zugleich ein wichtiges Zeugnis für die gesellschaftliche Krise zwischen dem fin de siècle und den krisengeschüttelten Nachkriegsjahren. *************** The great social upheavals brought about by industrialisation and by the horrific experience of the First World War also had a lasting effect on the role of Christianity in popular thought and created a climate of great uncertainty. This development was investigated not only by Oswald Spengler in his Decline of the West but also by the well-known Lutheran theologian Werner Elert (1885-1954), one of the major representatives of neo-Lutheranism. In this work, first published in 1923, he made the case for a clear distancing of Christianity from culture in general in favour of a qualitative autonomy of the history of salvation and an independent theological history. As well as a valuable work of theology Der Kampf um das Christentum is an important document of the social crisis between the fin de siècle and the crisis-ridden post-war years.
