An excellent book that clears up confusion many people have with the pagan belief systems. It provides many definitions for words that most people feel they understand but might be surprised to learn differently (i.e. pagan, witch, witchcraft, magic, etc.). Adler covers some of the historical background of religious controversy and a journey through how the neo-pagan movement has evolved. She has also gone into some detail about a few specific groups or churches constructed that have created their own unique belief systems, some using pantheons or deities of old as their foundation for worship. There are also many myths dispelled behind the use of magick and various pagan practices/rituals. While I found it difficult to read through some sections (feminism) this was because of my own feelings on the subject. Adler was able to present her book in a very unbiased manner and obviously had done much research. I found the sample questionnaire that was answered during one of her interviews quite interesting. I recommend this book as a starter for anyone who has an open mind and cannot find their emptiness filled with the traditional, institutionalized forms of religion. Terrific for those who have a love of all world religions, judges none above the other, and is on a path towards discovering their own inner light. Whatever worship you choose (and throughout life it may change many times) may you learn much, and Blessed Be!Read full review
This book offers a rudimentary, objective grasp of modern alternative religions. It’s valuable to anyone interested in better understanding the people who follow paths such as Wicca, Druidism, Neopaganism, etc. In 1992, when I first read Drawing Down the Moon by Margot Adler, I was searching for information on spiritual paths that could possibly compare with the dynamics and ideas I was experiencing in my own life. After fifteen years Margot Adler’s book remains the most influential reference I’ve encountered on the subject. She explores a variety of modern Pagan movements, examining their ideologies and backgrounds as well as presenting a history of Western Paganism in general. She relates individual Pagans’ stories, their experiences and their rationale for participating in the religions of their choosing and/or invention. The newer editions of Drawing Down the Moon also have updated networking resources.Read full review
Drawing down the Moon tells all about the pagan movement in the US. It has very interesting informatation on the subject, and is very well writen. I bouht the book because it is on pretty much every pagan reading list I've come across, and I thought, well, its time to read it. The biggest problem I've had is getting into the beginning of the book, but other than that it is very interesting. This is a must read for anyone who is pagan, interested in paganism, or just wants a little information about it.
This book is worth every penny I paid for it. If I'd have known it was this important and moving, I'd have paid full price the day it came out! Buy it. It doesn't matter what your beliefs are - this book explains stuff in ways that doesn't seem bias or fantastic. 😁😁😁

I had heard about this book years ago when I was brand new to my religion, but I had never picked it up because of what others had told me about it. I am so glad I've finally read this book. It's not really a "guide" book, more of a history of our religion and how much we've grown since the beginning. It's a must have for anybody who has questions or wonders about what being Wiccan/Pagan/Witch is really about.
When I 1st began my path into Paganism, this book was the 1st one suggested as a "must read." Although it was many yrs. ago that I read it, reading it again has taught me more. I would suggest it to anyone who is wondering what path, no matter what religion, it is that they should follow.
