    The Drugstore Cowboy

This is a movie about addiction, relationships, the road the recovery and the obstacles in the way. Matt Dillion stars are a small time hood sometime in the seventies. Along with his close knit gang they knock over pharmacies and rip off drugs dealers to get their fix. They get shaken down by police and face a litany of issues related to their drug use and criminal activity. Ultimately that along with superstition broken the gang breaks up and the uphill battle for recovery proves to be a long one. This is more of a film than a movie in sharp contrast to movies such as Blow and Trainspotting but the plot is done in very much the same vein. Matt Dillion and his supporting cast offer great acting performances in a story worth telling.

  • Interesting look at a darker side of life

This is a good movie and very well shot and directed, but I can't recommend this as a movie to own. The story is a bit unconventional and though it has some rather dull moments, it is ever interesting. The story seems to be lacking in some realism, but not so much to make it outside the realm of possibility. There is also a bit of backstory that could have been added in spots to make it a more complete film. In no way is this a bad movie and especially since this was the first movie by the director Gus Van Sant. As a director he shot a very good movie and got some very good performances from the actors especially Matt Dillon. The additional material on the DVD isn't anything great unless you are a film student. It is limited to the audio communtary by Gus Van Sant and ...

  • Good acting and narrative. Great direction. Good characters. Moves along. Nicely.

The film itself is 5 stars. One of my favorites. The dvd copy I received is in good shape. The plastic on the shell is a little torn.

  • Amazing

This movie is just a really good movie. I've never seen Matt Dillon play a better role than in this movie. I just watched it for the first time recently and must say it just passed Last Days as my favorite Van Sant film. They don't over glamorize drug use, they really seem to show it how it is for a junkie in their situation. Nothing good can come from it and his superstitions are crazy! Must see film if you appreciate good movies.

  • A Gus Van Sant Masterpiece

I first saw Drugstore Cowboy back in 1990 when I was only 13 years old, and it had such an impact on me that 16 years later, it came back to mind and I decided to purchase it. It is a gritty, poignant portrayal of drug addicts and the pain and emptiness that their habits produce. The film features Matt Dillon in perhaps the finest performance of his career, playing the leader of a small group of four drug-addled drifters who knock off drugstores to feed their addiction to prescription narcotics. When one of the four dies of an overdose, Dillon has a difficult decision to make, and his life will never be the same. I highly recommend this movie to anyone out there who likes films with substance that have an emotional impact that sticks with you for years to come. Sadly, very few films ...
