Though the text is a little dated in this version, the information is priceless. If you're going to build a model railroad that suits your tastes (or space)and you are not going with a published plan, you need to read this book. Not only are there ideas to assist you but also concepts that you may have not considered that would benefit your goals. For Example: "Don't do the same thing twice..." Armstrong argues that having two major yards may not be in the better interest of your layout as it consumes more space and each yard essentially provides the same function (and enjoyment) to which he then provides some alternative ideas to that particular scenario. I can't stress enough that you should read the book in its entirety - there are small passages that speak volumes in unexpected places. The only element that you may want to dismiss is Armstrong's concept of "squares" - and I only say this because of the invention of model railroad design software which has made the design process much easier then pencil & paper. (And for me, easier to see a 3D version of your layout as well.) Many concepts which are are common in today's model railroads was actually introduced from this book. John touches upon unheard of ideas such as: multiple levels, in-out subterfuge of load/empties, loops, and too much to remember or go into detail. Seriously - If you want to design your own pike, quit reading this review and buy this book.Read full review
